Robert Quijada
Robert Quijada (American, b. 1935–d. 2015) was a Postwar & Contemporary artist of Mexican‑American heritage.
Aside from fine art, he worked as a textile designer and commercial artist, collaborating with master printer Kathy Caraccio in the late 1970s, notably for the Orion publishing series, Print Collection.
Quijada is best known for mixed-media collages, often using painted paper, wood, acrylics, string, and other found and sculptural elements assembled in three-dimensional compositions.
His “Construction” series from the early 1980s—such as Black Composition V (1981) and Blue Construction No. 5 (1983)—embodies this layered, textured approach.
Another notable piece is The Heart of Henri Matisse (2008), a painted‑paper collage in a shadow‑box style, blending collage with homage to other artists.
In 2009, Metro Gallery in Los Angeles hosted a solo show titled “Icons”, featuring multimedia tributes to cultural figures like Josephine Baker, Pablo Picasso, Carmen Miranda, and Keith Haring.
The works incorporated gouache, coloured pencil, jewellery, photographs, wood, and found objects—reflecting Quijada’s unique, folk-inspired multimedia style.
