POTGLD 13
(PLAY POWER)
“Play Power” is a unique series of screen prints showcasing scratch card icons at 50 times their standard size. An important element of this piece is the purchase transaction, in which the buyer of the artwork does not know the value of the payment they make. The artwork can only be purchased by gifting the artist 50 valid, unscratched scratch cards. The buyer will receive a postal notice directly from the artist to inform them of the final value of the piece.

“[Play Power] aims to challenge the perception of power from the buyer to the artist. While it would be much easier for the artist to charge the sum of 50 scratch cards and purchase them herself, it is far more challenging for the audience to hold the responsibility of value, profit and potentially losing out. This piece also challenges the traditional value systems in the art world, where art is often priced based on factors such as the artist’s reputation, the materials used, and the complexity of the artwork. Overall, this piece of artwork offers a unique and thought-provoking commentary on the art world and the role of chance and risk in financial transactions.” – Greg Salisbury, The Guardian Arts.
