Description
Layers 12
Layers is a series of close-up photos of weathered fishing boats on various islands in Indonesia.
The repeated painting and coating of these boats not only represents a qualitative improvement but also a ritual act which promises protection and abundant catch to the owner. The choice of colours usually reflects local traditions and belief systems.
This craftsmanship combines cultural identity and creativity with the pragmatic necessity of protecting the boats against the abrasive forces of the coast. The continuous exposure to the elements leaves significant traces over time
Layers of paint reveal cracks, peeling, and discolouration. These traces of erosion are more than just signs of wear and tear; they become a narrative of the numerous journeys and adventures each boat has experienced.
Through the deliberate choice of framing, the intentional act of repainting merges with the unintended erosion by nature to create a visual symphony that celebrates the cycle of creation and decay.
The images were created between 2010 and 2023 on the islands of Lombok, Nusa Lembongan, Sumbawa and Bali.
